Tudor World

Tudor world is a living history museum in Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire. It is located on Sheep Street in what was known as the Shrieve’s House. The museum represents life in Tudor England (approx 1483-1603) through interactive and sensory exhibits. There are all the sights, sounds, smells of Tudor times as well as costumed guides.

Tudor museum is in a timber framed house whose foundations date back to 1196. Most of the building is now Tudor or later. the facade is from 1470 but much of this was rebuilt after the Stratford fire in 1594.It was named Shrieve’s House after William Shrieve, an archer for King Henry VIII, who was its first recorded tenant in 1536. in the 16th century the building was a tavern run by William Rogers.He is believed to have taken inspiration from Shakespeare’s comic character Falstaff. Shakespeare’s daughter, Suzannah, was also a close friend of Rogers’ daughter .

During the Civil War and the battle of Edgehill the house was used to billet Parliamentary soldiers.Then the first mayor of Stratford lived in the building. The house eventually became known as “Falstaff’s House” before later being rebranded as the Tudor World Museum.
